What is Considered a Plumbing Emergency?

A plumbing emergency disrupts the normal functioning of your plumbing system and poses a potential threat to your health, safety, or property. Here are some common situations that warrant calling a plumber immediately:

  • Burst Pipes: A burst pipe can cause significant water damage very quickly. If you hear a loud popping sound or notice a sudden and substantial increase in your water bill, it might indicate a burst pipe. Shut off the main water supply to your house and call a plumber right away.

  • Severe Leaks: Large leaks that you can’t isolate or contain can quickly lead to water damage. Look for signs like pooling water, warped walls, or peeling paint. Leaking near electrical wiring poses an additional safety hazard. In these cases, turn off the water supply if possible and call a plumber urgently.

  • Gas Leaks: If you smell rotten eggs or suspect a gas leak, evacuate your home immediately and call the gas company from a safe location. Natural gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and potentially cause explosions. Do not attempt to fix a gas leak yourself.

  • Overflowing Toilet: A toilet that overflows and won’t stop can cause significant water damage to your bathroom and surrounding areas. If plunging doesn’t resolve the issue, and you suspect a major clog or internal component failure, call a plumber to prevent further problems.

  • Sewage Backup: Sewage backing up into your drains is a serious health hazard. If you notice sewage smells, drains overflowing with sewage, or toilet waste bubbling up, evacuate the area and call a plumber immediately. Sewage can contain harmful bacteria and viruses.

  • Loss of Water: A complete loss of water pressure in your entire house can indicate a problem with the main water line or the shut-off valve. If you’ve checked the shut-off valve and there’s still no water, contact a plumber to diagnose the issue.

Remember: It’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you’re unsure whether a plumbing situation is an emergency, err on the side of caution and call Amalgamated Services
